Job Description
Desire Youth Initiative (DYI) is a women- and youth-led Community-Based Organization operating in Kilifi County, Kenya. The organization works to advance gender and social justice by preventing and responding to rights violations and abuse affecting women and girls, while promoting equal access to opportunities, information, and justice. DYI envisions a society where women and girls are empowered and their fundamental rights and freedoms are protected. The organization is actively engaged in sensitive and high-impact work, including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocacy, community mobilization against femicide, and responses to gender-based violence and discrimination. To effectively deliver on this mandate, strategic, ethical, and high-impact communication is essential. DYI seeks a dedicated Communications Officer to strengthen storytelling, amplify community voices, enhance advocacy campaigns, increase donor and partner engagement, and ensure responsible communication that reflects the organization’s values and impact at both national and global levels.

- Duration: 12 months (renewable annually based on performance and funding)

Purpose of the Role
- The Communications Officer will lead DYI’s communication and advocacy efforts, ensuring strong visibility, consistent branding, and effective documentation of impact stories across platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement DYI’s communications strategy
- Manage and update social media platforms and website content
- Document project activities through photography, videography, and storytelling
- Produce newsletters, press releases, and other communication materials
- Build and maintain relationships with media and key stakeholders
- Support advocacy campaigns and public engagement initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in communications, preferably within NGOs
- Proficiency in multimedia production and content creation
- Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills
