- Under the overall supervision of the Kwetu Centre Manager, the IMTA hub coordinator will manage the IMTA hub, Kwetu mariculture and coordinate activities in the field targeting project beneficiaries. The coordinator will work closely in collaboration with WorldFish team and the Kwetu centre Manager in the operationalization of the IMTA hub. Also, will be responsible for the project delivery and supervision of technical staff assigned to the project.
Qualifications
- An advanced degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, coastal and marine resources management, Microbiology, zoology/biology, marine engineering and related fields,
- At least 5 years’ experience working in the aquaculture/mariculture
- Ability to motivate and coordinate teams
- Flexibility in working for extended hours including night shifts and weekends
- Experience in marine fish hatchery management will be an added advantage
- Experience in data analysis, report writing and publications
- Experience in presentation of papers in national, regional and international forum will be an added advantage
- Evidence of resource mobilization will be an added advantage
- Experience in community or farmer mobilization
Main roles and responsibilities
- Responsible for resource mobilization for the department and accountable for wise use of resources for the department and target beneficiary groups.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the IMTA hub by offering leadership and technical guidance to technicians, trainers and other staff assigned to the hub
- Coordinate with WorldFish and other relevant stakeholders in responding to issues arising from the operationalization of the IMTA hub
- Initiate and spearhead collaborations and networks to advance research and refine sustainable silvofishery technologies in Kenya.
- Coordinate IMTA activities at the centre and within community beneficiaries
- Responsible for organizing IMTA farmer clusters and follow ups of the existing ones
- Maintain continuity and an extended field presence to backstop project activities in terms of training farmers and assist them to develop all farming activities in seaweed, and oyster, sea cucumber.
- Provide inputs into the development or adaptation of Best Management Practices on selected mariculture species;
- Establish strong linkage with County Director of Fisheries within coastal counties as well as related stakeholders on fisheries, forestry and environment;
- Document and disseminate mariculture and environmental research results in reports scientific journals, conferences and workshops both local and international
- Assist in preparing and organizing training sessions for seaweed farmers, milkfish farmers, crab farmers, oyster farmers, mangrove restoration, traders and technicians;
- Serve as resource person in the training programmes for farmers, traders and technicians.
- Provide monthly reports of all activities, as well as technical reports on special activities;
- Enhance collaborations and synergies between Kwetu departments and staffs through participatory monitoring and evaluation of projects and projects design.
- Supervise project staff assigned to the IMTA project and other Kwetu mariculture activities
- Development of user manuals and standard operating procedures
- Carry out other activities as instructed by the Kwetu Management.
Mariculture assistant/technician (2 Positions)
- Under the supervisor of the Kwetu IMTA project coordinator with dotted line on technical matters by the centre Manager or designate, the mariculture assistant officer will be responsible for the implementation of Blue Mariculture project (IMTA) related projects and responsible for optimal operationalization of mariculture infrastructure at Kwetu as the technical person.
Qualifications
- At least a diploma in fisheries and aquaculture, Coastal and marine resources conservation, aquatic sciences, microbiology, biology/zoology, marine engineering, lab technologist with at least 3 years working in the mariculture or marine related programmes.
- Experience in coastal and marine aquaculture technology especially working in a lab set up
- Ability to work for long hours including night shifts and weekends as per the job dictates
- Self-motivated and self-driven individual and result oriented.
- Ability to work extended hours and with little supervision
- Experience in operation of marine hatchery equipment will be an added advantage
- Able to read and comprehend standard operating procedures and other guidelines
- Need to have basic report writing skills
Main roles and responsibilities
- Accountable for wise use of resources for the department
- Responsible for day to day hatchery operations at Kwetu as the technical person.
- Maintain continuity and an extended field presence to backstop project activities in terms of training farmers and assist them to develop all farming activities in oysters, sea cucumber, seaweed, rabbit fish and other marine cultured species.
- Provide inputs into the development of training manuals for selected species
- Document and disseminate mariculture and environmental research results in reports, exhibitions as guided.
- Undetrake water quality monitoring in the culture systems
- Trouble shoot water quality related challenges in the hatchery
- Assist in preparing, organizing and conducting training sessions as guided
- Provide monthly reports of all activities, as well as technical reports on special activities;
- Work closely with researchers/students to refine small scale Mariculture and increase production.
- Report any incidences pertaining on the cultured organisms and facilities including ponds cages and hatcheries and undertake daily routine monitoring of the demo site as way of securing the demosite from predators, theft and vandalism.
- Weekly/daily technical data collection submission to assigned supervisor and management
- Attend to students and visitors interested on Mariculture and mangrove conservation
- Ensure Mariculture facilities and equipment are well taken care including monitoring calibration dates, taking minor renovations of ponds and cleaning the IMTA hub
- Undertake fingerlings collection and stocking, fish feeding and general management of culture facilities like ponds, tanks and cages.
